How this becomes public practice
Camp, household, crew, or circle
Ask what work must be done for survival, who freely chooses which work, what is currently being neglected, and where coercion is hiding under the name of duty.
Clinic, school, city office
Separate immediate relief from system repair. Feed, heal, teach, and clean now; then name the repeated failure that keeps producing the same emergency.
Personal practice
Do not call refusal freedom if it abandons necessary life-work. Do not call obligation virtue if it requires self-betrayal or domination.

Chapter section: Freedom without abandonment
Article Two teaches that consent and duty must be held together. The first boundary is simple: no one shall be enslaved. The second boundary is harder: life still requires food, healing, teaching, sanitation, clear thinking, trauma work, and artful contribution.
In practice, a circle should begin by listing the survival work in front of it. Then each adult names what they can honestly do without coercion. Any task that remains unclaimed becomes a visible hmmm: either the circle lacks capacity, the task has been misdefined, or the burden has been unfairly hidden.
The goal is not perfect agreement. The goal is to prevent two common failures: domination disguised as responsibility, and neglect disguised as freedom.

Article Two of The Interdependent Way begins: “None shall be enslaved.” That is the first line because coercion breaks consent, and consent is the basis of meaningful public life.
